Custom Brand Design for an AI Business – That Didn’t Want to Feel Like AI
When building out a techy, AI brand, the obvious choice for the look and feel is to lean into something very modern, futuristic, and, let’s face it, artificial.
It’s not wrong to want your AI branding to represent what you do.
So, when most people think of AI brands, they probably picture something sleek, minimal, and a little… well, cold.
Honesty check: Did you?
When you read that I was helping an AI brand with their whole branding suite, did you immediately picture something sort of tech-focused and sleek?
To be fair, that’s how most of the AI brands look and feel. But Cool AI wanted to run screaming in the opposite direction. This client wanted their AI brand to feel approachable and not overly technical. Behind all the code, the systems, and the automation is a real person running a real brand.
And that’s pretty much exactly what this custom brand design aimed to capture.

How We Built a Tech Brand That Felt Human in a Very Techy World
The Spark: A Smart Business Without a Strong Brand
Freek Cool is the founder of Cool AI – yeah, that’s his name. Pretty perfect for a techy, AI brand, right? We thought so, too. Freek is (and has been) deeply embedded in the AI world.
He’s educated, experienced, and building genuinely useful tools for the tech world – from custom chatbots to systems that help businesses run smarter and more efficiently. As a brand ourselves, we can honestly say his tools are going to make big impacts for small businesses.
But…visually?
Freek’s AI Generated Logo
His business look and feel was not matching the level of what it’s destined to accomplish.
As far as a branding suite goes, he had:
↪ A quick AI-generated logo
↪ No real, cohesive visual identity
↪ No confidence in how to show up or share his work visually
But the biggest issue of all was that he didn’t have a cohesive, professional brand suite that made his audience think: “This is real, powerful, and I’m interested.”
Custom brand design is the missing piece there – it takes a brand idea and fully forms it into a brand identity.
What Custom Brand Design Actually Solves: Is It Worth It?
Before we jump into the rest of Cool AI’s story, we have to take a minute to go on this side quest. If you’re wondering if brand design and a full brand identity are “worth it” for your business, think about it through Freek Cool’s brand for a second.
It wasn’t that we were on a sole mission to make his brand “look better” – we were, but that wasn’t the whole scope of it. What it really was about was building out a cohesive brand identity that would:
👍🏼 Reflect his brand’s personality
👍🏼 Make AI feel less intimidating for his end user and encourage them to try
👍🏼 Give him confidence to connect with people in real life
In Cool AI’s case, they’re one of the only brands out there leaning hard into a quirky and human-y visual identity. Other AI brands are relying on things like:
👎🏼 Corporate visuals
👎🏼 Cold-toned color palettes
👎🏼 Overly polished, impersonal design
It’s not that those things aren’t professional; it’s that they all begin to blend together in a blurred, morphed identity. That means one AI brand could easily be confused or mistaken for another AI brand or another.
And if that’s the case – if they’re all being lumped into a single category – do brands like that really have an identity?
We don’t think so.
What’s more, a personality and identity that doesn’t stand out becomes sort of anonymous – and anonymous brands don’t build trust, don’t connect with their audiences, and don’t convert curious browsers into fans and buyers.
The Direction: Make AI Feel Approachable
It’s obvious by now, right? We had to break the industry AI norm.
What’s unique about Cool AI is that it’s rooted in the idea that people want to understand what you do without being overwhelmed by it.
This is a huge gap with tech brands, but especially with AI brands, where most end users don’t actually “get” AI (and who can blame them? Most AI tools aren’t built for people to understand, just use).
Freek wanted his brand identity to be human and approachable because he knew the industry wasn’t human and approachable.
Our strategy was direct but simple. We wanted to keep the design:
🔥 Clear
🔥 Playful
🔥 Human first
So to do that, we evaluated and leaned hard into Freek’s personality: very easy going, super collaborative, and passionate!
Our biggest goal was to reflect all of those human elements instead of hiding behind the normal tech aesthetics.
The Fire: A Custom Brand Design Built on Real Personality
Don’t get me wrong – I love a standard logo system. But Cool AI needed something to tie in the human, quirky element. So, instead of opting for a normal logo suite, we built the entire brand around a character-driven identity.
What’s more fun, human, and lively than a hand-drawn logo or a brand-specific character? We opted for a custom brain character to become the anchor of the brand so that Cool AI could be fun, recognizable, and more human in a snap.
The character does a few big, important things for Cool AI:
Acts as a logo mark
Can evolve across future brand touchpoints
Brings human personality into spaces like chatbots (where AI usually feels cold)
The thing a lot of designers miss is that strong custom brand design isn’t just about visuals like logos. Ultimately, it’s about how you can use visuals to change how someone feels about your brand.
If we could use a character to make Cool AI feel more approachable and human, we were going to do it. (And spoiler, we did).
A Few Custom Brand Design Elements We Created
Because Cool AI opted for a full branding package, they got an entire identity – not just a brand character or a one-off logo.
We built them a whole suite including:
A hand-drawn logo suite (3 logos)
A custom color palette
Font pairings for clarity and personality
A business card design
A mini brand guidelines cheat sheet
A character mascot (as an add-on)
Everything was designed to work together, that way Freek isn’t guessing every time he creates something for Cool AI. It also makes it way easier when Freek outsources social media, chat support, and more – because there’s a visual guide for how his brand should look and feel across all touchpoints.
The Detail That Makes Cool AI’s Identity Stick
One of the most important pieces of this project was the Cool AI business card.
For Freek, a lot of his growth is happening outside of the digital world. He’s showing up and making connections via:
Real conversations
Through networking
Through in-person connections
We wanted to bring personality and identity into his card. So, instead of a standard old business card, we designed something that reflects what he actually does.
The back of his card mimics a chatbot interaction.
It’s subtle and clever because it immediately connects his brand to his work. We hope it’s a moment that people on the other end of his conversation remember forever.
The Impact: From “Side Thing” to Real Business Energy
The real win of any brand design is creating an identity that helps the business owner – and its dream audience – realize this “side thing” is a real business.
With Cool AI, the inconsistent visuals and no clear brand direction made it harder for Freek to show upconsistently and share about his business. The result? Low confidence where max confidence belonged.
But with a professional, personalized brand identity, Cool AI has:
❤️🔥 A cohesive, recognizable presence
❤️🔥 Tools to actually grow and show up
❤️🔥 A brand that feels like a real business (because it IS a real business)
Maybe the most important shift is the confidence Freek has to share about Cool AI – so he can show up in the spaces he belongs.
Why Custom Brand Design Matters – Especially in Crowded Industries
In industries like AI where everything starts to look the same, how your brand looks, feels, and is perceived is what ends up separating you from the herd.
Custom brand design helps your brand stand out, and when your brand stands out, you have the chance to cement recognition, build trust, and help your people remember you when it matters.
Let’s Build Your On-Fire Brand ASAP
If your current brand feels a little generic, a little disconnected, or a lot like it doesn’t actually reflect what you do or how you do it, it’s possible a custom brand design service could be just what the brand doctor ordered.
We’re all about creating custom brand identities that bring your vision to life – even if you don’t know what the vision is right off the bat.
