The Top 3 Myths About Brand Identity Design Services (& Why They’re Holding You Back)

Let’s face this honestly together.

You’ve thought about investing in a professional brand identity design service, right? It’s highly likely – because most business owners have pondered this decision over and over again.

Let’s face this part honestly, too – you’ve probably talked yourself out of it a few times, huh?

Typically, business owners aren’t talking themselves out of this service because they don’twant a stronger brand that looks professional, feels like them, and reaches their people. Everyone wants that!

Mostly, I find that business owners talk themselves out of this kind of investment because there are some weird (and frankly completely untrue) assumptions floating around out there in the ether about how brand design services work.

In short, some people think that…

  • Professional branding takes, like, six months to get right

  • They need a perfectly curated Pinterest before they can talk to a designer

  • A logo refresh is the same thing as a whole a** brand identity

Spoiler alert: all of those are big ol’ myths.

At House on Fire, we spend a lot of time helping business owners like you untangle the sticky perceptions of what brand identity design is and showing you what it actually looks like in real life.

Most of the myths you think are true are scaring you out of something that could be so beneficial for your business. So today, let's burn a few of those suckers down.

The Top 3 Myths About Brand Identity Design Services

Myth #1: Brand Design Services Take Forever

This is easily the one we hear the most.

Somehow, some way, the “professional branding” service got a rep for being a never-ending process filled with endless revisions, months of waiting, and one thousand questionnaires.

In short, they became a service that business owners think takes months.

And, OK, to be fair, some brand design projects could take months – but your brand’s identity shouldn’t be one of them.

The reality is that great brand identity design isn't about dragging out the process and “waiting for inspo” to strike. Any brand designer worth their salt knows that it's all about having a clear strategy, a collaborative process, and a designer who knows how to turn ideas into visuals your audience clicks with.

A focused process often yields way better results than one that stretches on indefinitely while a designer waits for the muse. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes you do have to give inspo a bit of time – but it shouldn’t be months or even weeks of time.

When decisions happen in real time, and momentum stays high, you avoid second-guessing every colour choice, font pairing, and logo variation.

Most designers don’t need six months to create a brand’s identity, and most business owners don’t need six months to decide if it fits their brand.

How We Bust That Brand Identity Design Myth

One of the reasons we built our Full Flame Brand Build (our weeklong brand identity design service!) the way we did is because we were tired of seeing business owners stuck in branding limbo for half a year.

You need someone who understands your vision, translates it into a cohesive visual identity, and helps you move forward with confidence.

That's exactly why our Full Flame Brand Build is designed to deliver a complete custom brand identity in a single work week!

We’re not trying to rush creativity at all, but we are cutting out all the unnecessary delays that keep great brand visuals stuck in perpetual draft mode.

Myth #2: You Need to Have Creative Direction Locked In Before Hiring a Designer

This one makes us giggle a little every single time. Usually, what happens is that a potential client reaches out and immediately apologizes. Then they say some sort of version of…

  • "I don't really know what I want."

  • "I don't have a Pinterest board."

  • "I'm not creative."

  • "I don't have any direction."

And when we laugh, friend, we’re not laughing at you – we’re laughing because that’s literally not your job. It’s ours!

That is the reason why designers exist. We’re in charge of the heavy lifting and the creative direction – it’s not on you to hand over a perfectly executed direction. If you can, that’s great – but that’s also what our brains, talents, and skills are for.

Imagine refusing to hire a personal trainer because you're not already in shape. Or avoiding a financial advisor because you don't already know how to invest.

Creative direction is not your job – it’s our job!

Sure, inspiration photos are great and it’s always helpful when you know what you like and why you like it.  But a professional brand identity designer isn't expecting you to show up with a fully developed visual strategy. If you had already figured all that out, you probably wouldn't need help in the first place.

How We Bust That Brand Identity Design Myth

A huge part of effective brand identity design is the discovery process, which means it’s about asking the right questions, uncovering what makes your business different, and understanding how you want people to feel when they interact with your brand.

Creative direction at House on Fire means we do the legwork to identify the personality, energy, and visual cues that will attract the right people. In fact, we’re giddy little freaks for this part of the process (it’s why we love what we do so much!)

That’s why our process starts with strategy and discovery before we ever touch the design or brainstorming work. That collaborative approach helps us build a visual identity that's rooted in your business goals instead of random aesthetic trends.

So if you've been putting off branding because you don't have a crystal-clear vision yet, consider this your permission slip to stop worrying.

Really, you don't need all the answers. You actually don’t need any answers. We’ll guide you through the process.

Myth #3: I Don't Need a Full Brand Identity, Just a Quick Refresh

This one is a little trickier because, frankly, sometimes it's true. But it’s not true as often as you might think.

Sometimes your brand genuinely just needs a refresh. Maybe your logo needs cleaning up, the colours need some refinement, and your visuals need to evolve a smidge to catch up with your business.

But as a designer who’s been in the biz a long time, I’ve noticed that usually when a business owner uses the phrase "quick refresh,” it’s basically interchangeable with a brand identity that’s actually being held together by duct tape and good intentions.

Let's do a quick reality check.

If …

  • Your logo doesn't match your website

  • Your Instagram story graphics look completely different from your email marketing

  • You’ve accumulated six fonts, four colour palettes, and 17 slightly different versions of your logo

  • You don’t have an actual identity but just a piecemeal portion of visuals taped together

It’s safe to say you probably don't need a refresh.

You need a cohesive, strategic identity that pulls your whole brand into oneness.

A visual refresh changes a few surface-level elements, but a complete brand identity design creates a whole a** identity that people recognize.

It gives you the logo suite (all hand-drawn for a completely custom take), typography, colours, visual assets, and – importantly – visual guidelines that make every customer touchpoint feel connected.

The goal is always to build recognition for your brand’s visual and create something your people love and feel. When someone lands on your website, sees your social content, opens your emails, or receives your packaging, it should all feel like the same business.

How We Bust That Brand Identity Design Myth

A full brand identity basically means designing a visual brand world – the Full Flame Build is an all-in, custom approach to a cohesive brand identity that includes everything you need to create that brand world.

We’re talkin’:

  • Brand Strategy Call

  • Moodboard Discovery

  • Brand Pitch

  • Hand-drawn digital Logo Suite ( 3 logos)

  • Font Selection

  • Custom Colour Palette

  • Business Card Design

  • Mini Brand Guidelines Cheat Sheet

  • Files in all needed formats

Basically, everything you need for an entire identity (not just a logo or two!)

The Real Question to Ask About Brand Identity Design

Instead of asking yourself something like: "Do I really need professional branding?"

Try asking something else, more like:  "Is my current brand helping me show up the way I want to be perceived?"

If the answer is yes, amazing. Keep going. You’re doing something right.

But if you're feeling disconnected from your visuals, inconsistent across platforms, embarrassed to send people to your website, or stuck in a cycle of DIY updates every few months, it might be time to stop patching things together and invest in something that does the heavy lifting for you.
